His Legacy
Youth Sports Hall of Fame
Small played at Desert High School from ’72-74. He was All League in football, basketball, and track. From Desert, he went on to San Jose State, where he started at corner for three years.
In 1975, the San Jose State Spartans had arguably the most talented roster in school history, with Steve DeBerg, Carl Ekern, Rick Kane, and Small. All went on to productive NFL careers. That group went 9-2 with huge wins at Oregon and Stanford. But it also rates as one of the most disappointing seasons because it ended with a shocking 30-20 loss at Hawaii.
In 1978, Small was drafted in the 4th round, 98th overall, by the Dolphins. He played for the Dolphins and Falcons over a 7-year NFL career. That year, he had 4 interceptions, returning one for a touchdown. He ended up playing in 104 NFL games, recording 24 interceptions.
Gerald currently resides in Sacramento.
