Burrell became a varsity starter as a sophomore at Highland, and averaged 10 pts a game. A prolific outside shooter, John improved his scoring average to 21 pts a game his junior year as his Bulldogs advanced to the CIF quarterfinals before losing to Mater Dei. His senior year scoring average increased to 29 pts a game. The Bulldogs won the Golden League title before being eliminated in the 2nd round of the playoffs.
John was named to the All CIF team and the All State team that senior year, while being named Golden League MVP. Two years playing at AV College for Newton Chellette brought similar success. He was All Conference as a Freshman as the Marauders went 30-4, grabbing the #1 JC ranking in the state at one time. They ended up ranked 2nd in the state. John was named to the All State team as a sophomore, and was listed as the 23rd best Junior College player in the country, at any position, by Dick Vitale. John is still the 2nd all time leading scorer at Antelope Valley College.
John played one year for the Wolfpack at Nevada-Reno, where he was named to the All Big West team while averaging 17 pts a game. Then, it was on to Northridge, where he played for Bobby Braswell. It was a big year for the Mauraders, as Burrell and fellow Antelope Valley product Marcus Carr helped Northridge upset UCLA on their way to earning a March Madness berth. Burrell scored 17 points against UCLA, and then scored 19 points against Kansas in Northridge's opening game loss in the NCAA tournament. John was named to the All Big Sky team that year as well.
